Ben Lee is the co-founder and CEO of Neon Roots, a digital development agency with a mission to destroy the development model and rebuild it from the ground up. After a brief correspondence with Fidel Castro at age nine, Ben decided to start doing things his own way, going from busboy to club manager at a world-class nightclub before he turned 18. Since then, Ben has founded or taken a leading role in 5 businesses in everything from software development to food and entertainment.

We are huge fans of augmented reality.  At Neon Roots, we have created many custom augmented reality (AR) apps that have been used in diverse settings from award shows to record labels.  We were excited to discover the latest use of AR by the design firm Gensler.  Engadget reports that Gensler, the architecture, design, and consulting firm, has introduced an augmented reality application to expand the reach of their portfolio.

“The Hive / Gensler Multi Surface Experience” allows visitors at Gensler’s Los Angeles office to interact with their portfolio through hand gestures that activate content and visual images.  The menu appears on a table and the images can be seen in a screen in front of the viewer.  The movement between the user and the 3D interface creates a more active experience between the company’s work and the viewer.

On a more commercial level, IKEA will be releasing its augmented reality app on August 25th.  The AR app will allow IKEA catalog viewers to superimpose specific furniture into their homes through their mobile devices.  Customers can get a better idea of not only how the piece will look in their home but if it will be too tight a squeeze or a major clash with the existing design.  IKEA has about 90 products that are accessible through their AR app and can be beamed into your home through the catalog to get a feel before you decide to purchase.

The world of augmented reality continues to grow in some of the most exciting and creative ways.   If you have any questions about how AR can be applied to your business, just drop us a note!
